"Helluva" Reunion

The Original Four were reunited. Finally, after a long wait the original four Helluva Drivers managed to get together for an Island round. This time guests were out-of-towners and Island newbies Karl and Ryan, plus DG veteran Steve. Surprisingly the "seven-some" moved smoothly around the course after deftly snagging water taxis to and fro. When all was said and done Swanny edged Sparky by a stroke, Wade blew a gasket late in the round and WowWow got in the most throws for his money.
Let's hope for another reunion sooner rather than later in August. Will the "Helluva Drive" Cup trade hands this year? Stay tuned.
Here's the hole-by-hole recap for July 30th

"Musta Been" a "Helluva" BBQ

Well, yes it was a "Helluva" BBQ

Peterborough Road Trip "Musta Been" Challenge

Since Swanny's recent migration to the countryside it's been a little difficult getting the Helluva Drivers together but today we managed to gather Swan, Wow and Wade "Hawkman" Jackson to test the "mighty" Otonabee 9 hole circuit. The lads shot 36 holes and after an omenous opening hole 5, the recently on fire Mr. Jackson started to sparkle again. Shooting 6 birdies on the first 18 for a score of 52 (two under par) Wade set the stage for the day. Last year's Most Improved player could very well take that title again, as his play continues to progress, while the oldtimers Wow and Swan seem stuck in a time warp. Scores of 52 (Wade), 56 (Swan) and 63 (Wow) were tweaked to reflect Helluva Drive accepted numbers, so an intricate levelling formula was created where 14 strokes would be added to enable the stats to count in this years standings. On the second round Wade proved he had some simply human qualities and shot an earthly 57, nudging out Swanny's 58 and WowWow McWowerstein's 60. Bevies were kept in check as there was still a drive back for Marty and Wade, and a post round BBQ featured a heap of meat that seemed endless.
The Helluva Drivers head into the Summer season with a tight race atop the leader board. Here's the scores from the Peterborough Riverview Park rounds of June 12th.

Wade Jackson: No More Mr. Nice Guy

Aliens have kidnapped Wade Jackson and replaced him with a Disc Golf Superhero known as "Hawkman". Once an enjoyable golf companion, now a technically precise, emotionless machine. The "new" Wade put on a driving clinic featuring his recently purchased "Hawk" and time and time again threw it long and straight on a breezy Sunday outing and eventually scored a personal best of 70. "Hawkman", Sparky and Swanny played with Peterborough guests Dave Gillett and wife Roxanne in the first round. Dave took honours with an impressive newcomer score 0f 72, while the Helluva Drivers all scored 74. While Dave and Roxanne had to catch an early ferry, the boys carried on with scores of 70 for The Alien and 75 and 78 for Swanny and Sparky respectively. Water was a feature for many of the fellas, and Swanny scored a snowman on the long dogleg 8th but made amends later with a "monster" 100 foot par shot on the 12th , measured off by Super Wade. A good time was had by all. All that was missing was Wow Wow, 6 Stellas and a floating Hydra.

helluva wind!

Three of four Helluva Drivers got out to the Island today under windy, buggy conditions. Swanny was stuck in Peterborough but Sparky,Wade and WowWow got a couple rounds in nonetheless and tinkered with the standings. Reports speak of monster drives from Wow and only the second birdie of the year. Scores are posted below.

Helluva Drivers New Plastic

Spotted recently in the bags of the Helluva Drivers:
Wade has a new Discraft Hawk (watch out trees, see previous story) an approach/putter Soft "Chain Smashing(?)" Magnet and a Rattler...
Marty McWow has been spotted with new discs as well; Innova Mid Range Stingray, and a couple others that were forgotten by this blogger. Looks like there may be a foursome getting together at The Island this week where we'll give you the lowdown on their performances.

Wade's new "Tree Hawk"

As we know, the hawk is a soaring creature which spends much of it's time aloft, searching for it's target. As with all living beings it also needs to rest. The hawk enjoys to rest in a tree, as Wade learned time and time again. After flying into an evergreen on three different occasions, Wade's new Discraft Hawk finally found it's perch atop an apple tree. Fortunately, it was coaxed out and will fly again.

Peterborough... or Peter"birdie"

All it took was a couple days for Swanny and Wade to get a handle on the Riverview Park Disc Golf Course in scenic Peterborough. Day One offered blue skies but gusty, unpredictable winds which kept the scores in check. The local rule is to call all 9 holes on this short course par 3's and the fellas threw low to mid 60's over 18 holes while learning the lay of the track. A low 9 hole score of 29 was entered by "W", while Swanny managed a couple birdies but still failed to break 30 over 9. That evening over a few Guinness the Helluva Drivers figured the next day would yield much better scores, as the long hole experience gained from numerous Toronto Island rounds should make a short course highly manageable under the right conditions. The following day the Disc Golf Gods would comply.
Day Two featured little wind with some cloud cover. With the course to themselves Wade and Swanny dialed their games in and started throwing with authority. On the first 18 Wade sank an unbelievable 4 birdies, nailing the 7th on the first 9, then the 1st, 3rd and 9th on the back to end up with a phenomenal (and surely the mark to beat for awhile) 56. Swanny countered with 3 birdies of his own, on the 7th first time around, then the 2nd and 4th, finishing one off Wade's pace with 57. Another round of 18 produced scores of 58 for Swan (3 more birdies) and 59 for Wade. As the arms were tiring 9 holes more and three more birds, the boys had had enough.
A day for the books. Here are the numbers:

SPARKY CONTINUES CLIMB

With impressive rounds of 68 and 72 in the recent Island outing Sparky continues his meteoric climb up the stats page, knocking Wade out of second and breathing down the neck of leader Swanny. Rumour has it "The Sparkly One" has put the hockey skates on the backburner and has decided to free up some more time which can only further tighten up the ranking ladder. Last year's inaugral Helluva Drive Cup winner, Sparky may well find himself in the driver's seat within the next few weeks. Stay tuned, things could heat up.

another day, another hydra

The fabulous Helluva Drive Disc Golfers got together today for the first May round on the Toronto Islands. Swanny commuted in from Peterborough after catching the 7:45 a.m. bus and finally hooking up with Wade, Wow and Sparky on the 14th soon after noon. By then Wow had already donated another floater to the lagoon after an errant chip out of the rough on his not-so-favourite hole, the ninth. Wade was nursing a sore elbow suffered a week back in a training session and will not likely return for another week, but nonetheless showed his enthusiasm and thirst while sipping vodka and gatorade and playing videographer. Sparky continued his improving ways, whittling his score to an impressive 68 on the first 18, equalling his best tally of the year. Wow ended up with a "room for improvement" 75.
Swanny got in from the start of the second round and stunned the crowd with a 90 foot approach basket clanger on the second hole, pure birdie material although unfortunately it was for par. Birdies are still few and far between this year, with only one registered by the lads. Sparky again took the round, edging out Swanny 72 to 73 Marty McRoller settled with a 76.

May 1, Peterborough

Swanny and Wade played for Wades first time in Peterborough yesterday.
A very short course-pitch and put-but some different type holes than the island.
Tight narrow fairways on some holes and uphill shots on others, deceptively challenging.
Also to note very slow greens.

otonabee testing run

Wade and Swanny checked out the Riverview Park in Peterborough disc golf course. 9 holes scattered behind trees, around hedges, up and downhills along the picturesque Otonabee River. Its small but challenging, with some throws that present interesting conditions and a bit of water to keep you honest. Though they didn't count score the lads threw sub par for sure as there were par fours that should be considered threes and par threes that were really drive and putts. Good fun all around and a bit of a taste of what's to come at the inaugral Peterborough "Musta Been" Challenge 09.

Inaugral "Musta Been" Challenge- Peterborough, Ontario

Stay tuned for the first tourney of the 2009 Season! Introducing the "Musta Been" Challenge, 36 holes of disc golf at Peterborough's scenic Riverview Park Disc Golf course, overloooking the Otonabee River. Taking place in mid-May the tournament itinerary includes a visit to the petting zoo, the legendary "Only Cafe" and of course a visit to Swanny's new digs for the presentation of the trophy during a suds soaked bbq session. Stay tuned.

CAUTION: FLYING SPARKS!

Only 7 rounds into the 2009 season and young Sparky has leapfrogged Marty McWowWow and sits tied with Wade "W" Jackson in the Helluva Drive handicap rankings. Twice Sparky has thrown 68 this young season and we all know all it takes is a bit of a "spark" to ignite an inferno. Helluva Drivers: "Stand up and take notice"

Looks like Sparky may be a bit nervous. Went out solo for a chance to chop that handicap down a few strokes. Looks like he may have. Damn you Sparky!

monday apr27/09 water, water, everywhere

Well today's round was a spontaneous one. The weather forecast was 27c and sunny and we're still talking April, so Swanny and Sparky went for it. Things started well for Swanny throwing 5 pars in the first 6 holes. Water became an issue. First Sparky sank one on the fourth, and then Swanny hit the wet stuff not once, but twice on the 9th. That did it for the first round, with Sparky squeaking to victory with a one stroke win.
The second round was all Sparky. With the exception of a 6 on the dogleg 8th and a 5 on the long 13, Sparky threw 3's and 4's all afternoon. A great 68 was his final tally, and there is evidence he can do even better. The Helios was flying true and putting was tightening up. Swanny had some putting trouble and a few errant drives but kept the lid on with a reasonable early season 75.

Second outing in two days. Swanny and Wade carried on after Thursday's round at Casa Swanny. The next morning came fast and furious and the only liquid refreshments available were vodka and gatorade. This was to be Swanny's downfall, as the scores will attest. Wade continued his improving ways and Sparky began the gradual road back.

discs you just can't do without- "Hydra"

Ask Marty Wow Wow about the Hydra. This approach/putter by Innova can float. Mr. Wow tossed his original white Hydra into the water beside the ninth hole at The Island at least, let's say, twenty times if not more. So we know two things for sure; it flies like most stabile discs for a lefty, left to right, and it floats. Wow is now breaking in a new Hydra as the original white one landed gracefully on ice in March 2009 and sat there for a week or two stranded. Eventually the ice melted and the Hydra floated away to join the spring migration of all floating discs and is now retired and living in south Florida.

discs you just can't do without- "Stratus"

Ah, the Discraft "Stratus". The one disc that all four of the original "Helluva Drive" Disc Golfers really couldn't think of leaving home without. So prized that most of the lads have two, and those that don't wouldn't dare throw it under any conditions that could be considered dangerous. Understable yet sooooo trustworthy. Some say it is the main reason for Wade "W" Jackson's unbelievable climb up the rankings this year. Flies where no disc has flown before, this disc is in a class of it's own. If you've got scuba gear you could find a version of this disc in black at the bottom of the canal off to the right of the first tee, courtesy of an errant Sparky toss.

discs you just can't do without- "Typhoon"

This is Swanny's first run Discraft "Typhoon". It is no longer produced. It is a moderately stabile mid-range driver that is
the most reliable, "go to" disc in his bag of weapons. Purchased
originally second-hand, it's history is unknown. It has been "almost" lost on a few occasions but always worth an extra look. Most recently it was retrieved from the Otonabee River in Peterborough. Swanny is still trying to find a similar disc that gives the same amount of confidence throw after throw.

helluva day- thursday april 16/09

Wade, Wow and Swanny played 36 holes on the island today under beautiful conditions; sunny, warm, no wind and few other golfers. Wade once again showed why he was crowned the 2008 Most Improved Disc Golfer and could be the guy to beat this year. Wade threw impressive rounds of 70 and 72, while Swanny consistently shot 71 and 71. Wow was up and down but seemed to be settling down by the end of the day. The festivites carried on to the Marina bar afterwards and back to Swanny's lair for more bevies, a bit of nutrition, and a screening of Wow Wow's latest dvd.
