helluva wind!

Three of four Helluva Drivers got out to the Island today under windy, buggy conditions. Swanny was stuck in Peterborough but Sparky,Wade and WowWow got a couple rounds in nonetheless and tinkered with the standings. Reports speak of monster drives from Wow and only the second birdie of the year. Scores are posted below.

Helluva Drivers New Plastic

Spotted recently in the bags of the Helluva Drivers:
Wade has a new Discraft Hawk (watch out trees, see previous story) an approach/putter Soft "Chain Smashing(?)" Magnet and a Rattler...
Marty McWow has been spotted with new discs as well; Innova Mid Range Stingray, and a couple others that were forgotten by this blogger. Looks like there may be a foursome getting together at The Island this week where we'll give you the lowdown on their performances.

Wade's new "Tree Hawk"

As we know, the hawk is a soaring creature which spends much of it's time aloft, searching for it's target. As with all living beings it also needs to rest. The hawk enjoys to rest in a tree, as Wade learned time and time again. After flying into an evergreen on three different occasions, Wade's new Discraft Hawk finally found it's perch atop an apple tree. Fortunately, it was coaxed out and will fly again.

Peterborough... or Peter"birdie"

All it took was a couple days for Swanny and Wade to get a handle on the Riverview Park Disc Golf Course in scenic Peterborough. Day One offered blue skies but gusty, unpredictable winds which kept the scores in check. The local rule is to call all 9 holes on this short course par 3's and the fellas threw low to mid 60's over 18 holes while learning the lay of the track. A low 9 hole score of 29 was entered by "W", while Swanny managed a couple birdies but still failed to break 30 over 9. That evening over a few Guinness the Helluva Drivers figured the next day would yield much better scores, as the long hole experience gained from numerous Toronto Island rounds should make a short course highly manageable under the right conditions. The following day the Disc Golf Gods would comply.
Day Two featured little wind with some cloud cover. With the course to themselves Wade and Swanny dialed their games in and started throwing with authority. On the first 18 Wade sank an unbelievable 4 birdies, nailing the 7th on the first 9, then the 1st, 3rd and 9th on the back to end up with a phenomenal (and surely the mark to beat for awhile) 56. Swanny countered with 3 birdies of his own, on the 7th first time around, then the 2nd and 4th, finishing one off Wade's pace with 57. Another round of 18 produced scores of 58 for Swan (3 more birdies) and 59 for Wade. As the arms were tiring 9 holes more and three more birds, the boys had had enough.
A day for the books. Here are the numbers:

SPARKY CONTINUES CLIMB

With impressive rounds of 68 and 72 in the recent Island outing Sparky continues his meteoric climb up the stats page, knocking Wade out of second and breathing down the neck of leader Swanny. Rumour has it "The Sparkly One" has put the hockey skates on the backburner and has decided to free up some more time which can only further tighten up the ranking ladder. Last year's inaugral Helluva Drive Cup winner, Sparky may well find himself in the driver's seat within the next few weeks. Stay tuned, things could heat up.

another day, another hydra

The fabulous Helluva Drive Disc Golfers got together today for the first May round on the Toronto Islands. Swanny commuted in from Peterborough after catching the 7:45 a.m. bus and finally hooking up with Wade, Wow and Sparky on the 14th soon after noon. By then Wow had already donated another floater to the lagoon after an errant chip out of the rough on his not-so-favourite hole, the ninth. Wade was nursing a sore elbow suffered a week back in a training session and will not likely return for another week, but nonetheless showed his enthusiasm and thirst while sipping vodka and gatorade and playing videographer. Sparky continued his improving ways, whittling his score to an impressive 68 on the first 18, equalling his best tally of the year. Wow ended up with a "room for improvement" 75.
Swanny got in from the start of the second round and stunned the crowd with a 90 foot approach basket clanger on the second hole, pure birdie material although unfortunately it was for par. Birdies are still few and far between this year, with only one registered by the lads. Sparky again took the round, edging out Swanny 72 to 73 Marty McRoller settled with a 76.

May 1, Peterborough

Swanny and Wade played for Wades first time in Peterborough yesterday.
A very short course-pitch and put-but some different type holes than the island.
Tight narrow fairways on some holes and uphill shots on others, deceptively challenging.
Also to note very slow greens.

otonabee testing run

Wade and Swanny checked out the Riverview Park in Peterborough disc golf course. 9 holes scattered behind trees, around hedges, up and downhills along the picturesque Otonabee River. Its small but challenging, with some throws that present interesting conditions and a bit of water to keep you honest. Though they didn't count score the lads threw sub par for sure as there were par fours that should be considered threes and par threes that were really drive and putts. Good fun all around and a bit of a taste of what's to come at the inaugral Peterborough "Musta Been" Challenge 09.
